Canopus Foundation

Environmental protection, poverty alleviation and entrepreneurial commitment

The Canopus Foundation is a registered private family foundation under German jurisdiction committed to entrepreneurial projects in developing and emerging countries since 1997. Since 2014 Canopus additionally is active in the field of education and science for a sustainable economy.

Canopus promotes social enterprises which aim at alleviating poverty in off-grid rural areas and poor urban neighborhoods with financial resources and business expertise. Together with its partner organization Ashoka, the foundation started the global “Solar for All” initiative, which aims at making solar energy affordable to the 1.1 billion people worldwide who are without access to electricity.

Since 2014 the Canopus Foundation is shareholder of the HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Governance Platform (HVGP) gGmbH in Berlin, and supports the establishment of the Cusanus Hochschule (engl. "Cusanus University") in Bernkastel-Kues, Germany. These engagements are aimed at contributing to solving the legitimacy crisis of the economic sciences and supporting research and academics on the topic of sustainable economics.
